* Good-bye Southgates Garage.
Built in 1927, Southgates Midland Red Garage was a Leicester landmark on the corner of Peacock Lane and Southgate Street. In its time, the forecourt on the corner of these two streets, was a major coach station.
When we moved to Braunstone in January 1979, a suburb of Leicester, this open area on the corner became the starting point/terminus for our local bus route and those to nearby Millfield. Routes 1, 2 & 4.
Already having been bitten by the bus bug when I was about 8 years old, I never dreamed I’d spend some of my working life at this garage.
In 1990 I started work for Midland Fox (the Leicestershire successor to Midland Red) as a Publicity Assistant. Part of my job involved some work at the print room – which was a portakabin on the aforementioned forecourt. The view in the photo is actually looking towards where it used to be!
I left the company in 1995, but I have a lot of memories of working at this garage and also at my base on Millstone Lane, just round the corner.
This Blip was taken during our visit to Leicester for my Mum’s funeral.
The exit arch to the garage with the word “Midland” above it, is the only part of the building that is left, it is through this that the picture shows new DeMontfort University buildings in the distance, looking towards Southgates Underpass and the Magazine Gateway.
Indeed the site of Southgates Garage is earmarked for student accomodation.
